Demanding that the Vatican “immediately remove” clergy who are child abusers, the United Nations released a report that criticized the Vatican for not dealing with priests who have abused thousands of children. The report also criticized the church for its attitudes toward homosexuality, abortion and contraception.
The Vatican responded by accusing the authors of the report with interference saying that it appeared “heavily agenda-driven and smacking of acute political correctness.”
“The Holy See takes note of the concluding observations on its reports… [but] does, however, regret to see… an attempt to interfere with Catholic Church teaching on the dignity of the human person… [and] reiterates its commitment to defending and protecting the rights of the child,” it said in a statement.
The report from the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) also criticized the Holy See for not holding clergy sex offenders accountable, but of transferring them from parish to parish. The report expressed concern that the church had not acknowledged the extent of the crimes committed, and called on Pope Francis and the Vatican commission set up to deal with child abuse to investigate the conduct of the Catholic hierarchy as well as the abuse of children.
The report also singled out Ireland’s Magdalene laundries as an example of the scandal, including degrading treatment, violence and sexual abuse. The laundries were workhouses for 10,000 women and girls who were required to do unpaid manual labor between 1922 and 1996.
The UN requested the Vatican to release data on abuse, but the church refused leading to further allegations of cover-up.
The Vatican confirmed that more than 400 priests had been defrocked in a two-year period by Pope Benedict XVI over claims of child abuse. Whether these former priests were ever prosecuted by public authorities is unclear.
“The UN committee’s recommendations are non-binding and there is no enforcement mechanism.”
“And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH… And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.” Revelation 17:4, 5, 16
While the UN may have political agendas, the abominations of Rome have prepared the way for her own destruction. Perhaps the UN will be involved in the punishment of the Church for its abominations that make even secular people cringe in astonishment.
