The Weather Channel, by weather.com meteorologists: In Louisiana, small signs of progress. Lights came on in parts of New Orleans and some stores have opened their doors, but nearly a million people in the state are still in the dark and residents are now scrambling for basics like food, gas, water, and relief from the oppressive heat. Some cooling sites have been set up where people can get meals and sit in air conditioning, but officials say more than 600,000 people lack running water and in hard hit LaPlace areas are still submerged. Volunteers were seen helping people rescued from flood waters off a military truck. As crews reach more places the true scope of disaster is coming to light. One private firm estimates the total damage from Ida could top 50 billion dollars. The storm has been blamed for at least six deaths.
