Pope Francis has added a stop to his trip to the United States this coming September – The White House. U.S. officials have confirmed the meeting on September 23 with an official opening ceremony at the presidential residence. The pope will be visiting the United States for the World Meeting of Families that month and will visit the United Nations and speak to a joint session of the U.S. Congress.
President Obama and First Lady Michelle will meet with the pope and will further discuss their shared values, including “caring for the marginalized and the poor; advancing economic opportunity for all; serving as good stewards of the environment; protecting religious minorities and promoting religious freedom around the world; and welcoming and integrating immigrants and refugees into our communities.”
The world day of families will draw more than 1 million from all over the world. It is the first time the meeting is being held in the United States. The pope will also say Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. The pope will also add another saint too the calendar of saints, Junipero Serra, founder of the first Catholic missions in California.
“The President looks forward to continuing this conversation with the Holy Father during his first visit to the United States as Pope,” the White House said in a statement.
