The pope and the prime minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, met on September 17 and discussed the relationship of church and state and the right to religious freedom.
Prime Minister Bettel also met with Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, secretary for Relations with States. They discussed the relationship between church and state in the grand duchy of Luxembourg, especially “underlining the relevance of religious freedom and spiritual values for social cohesion.”
They also discussed European matters in relation to current conflicts, migration, and refugees, as well as persecuted religious minorities.
Luxembourg holds the presidency of the European Union at the moment. The population of Luxembourg is slightly over a half million and is about 87% Catholic.
