On the Frontlines of Prophecy
“Pastor Mayer,” wrote Reed from Germany, “I ‘religiously’ follow your prophecy briefings as time closes in on us here in Europe… I was reading yesterday your most recent Prophetic Intelligence Briefing this morning on “Declaration of Faith in Unity for Mission” (which Tony Palmer and other evangelical leaders handed to the pope recently). We have that going on in the SDA church in Germany. Bible study contacts developed through AFCOE-Europe want to be baptized but because they were baptized as kids years ago by some other denomination, the local SDA pastors decline to baptize [them]. [It’s] part of the ecumenical ‘commitment.’ We are very much on the front of prophecy live, as you know…”
Highwood Spirit
“I learned how to be a better person,” said Ted, when asked how he enjoyed the spiritual retreat at Highwood Health Retreat. “I learned the pleasure of being of service wherever needed,” he added.
Keep the Faith held a spiritual retreat at Highwood in August. Attendees came from New South Wales, Victoria and New Zealand. The speakers were Doug Hurley, from Autumn Leaves ministry in New Zealand, Elvis Placer from Remnant Herald Ministry in Victoria, Peter Roberts from Highwood Health Retreat and me. The participants really enjoyed digging deeply into the Bible.
Health principles were mixed in with the spiritual study. “It was a balanced programme,” said Li, one of the participants. “There was plenty of time to walk, and the health nuggets were very good,” added Angela. “The daily steam baths were a lovely surprise, too.”
“My brain cells started sparking up again,” said Wendy. “The Bible has come back to life! The practical application of the Bible has helped me to think of ordinary things in a spiritual way.” Then she added, “It was a week of Sabbaths.”
Those who had never been to Highwood noted the beauty of the place. “Ted and I really enjoyed the atmosphere,” said Prakash, “It is so nice here. Its like we are close to heaven.”
African-American Vegetarians Have Better Health
A recent study at Loma Linda University showed that African-American vegetarians are at lower risk of heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. The study, which was part of the University’s long-term research on Seventh-day Adventists, was done on a range of Adventists from strict vegetarians to those who eat meat.
The findings revealed that among black vegetarians there is a nearly 50 percent lower risk of high blood pressure, and more than 40 percent less likelihood of obesity. Up until the last 10-15 years, most studies were primarily focused on while males. This study revealed that the same effects of lifestyle differences are seen in more diverse ethnicities.
While the results of this study are unsurprising, it is further confirmation that vegetarian lifestyle leads to better health. The study also revealed that there is little difference between those who ate a little meat or only fish and people who ate meat at every meal.
“Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables constitute the diet chosen for us by our Creator. These foods, prepared in as simple and natural a manner as possible, are the most healthful and nourishing. They impart a strength, a power of endurance, and a vigor of intellect that are not afforded by a more complex and stimulating diet.” Ministry of Healing, page 296
