Ebola still Raging in West Africa

Tuesday February 3rd, 2015
Print This Post Print This Post

Ebola is now the disease with the most deaths on the planet since it was discovered in 1976. The current outbreak has now killed more than 8,600 people through January 21, 2015, more than all other known Ebola outbreaks combined. Deaths are mainly in three countries; Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone. The total number of reported cases is more the 21,750. But those figures are likely underestimates. Recently scores of bodies were found in a remote diamond-mining area of Sierra Leone, raising fears that the scale of the outbreak is unclear.

The outbreaks in Nigeria and Senegal have been declared officially over because there have been no new cases reported since early September 2014. Yet in the three main countries in West Africa effected, the disease is considered to be out of control. In September, WHO director general Margaret Chan said the number of patients was “moving far faster than the capacity to manage them.” A fourth country, Mali, is currently battling a second wave of the deadly virus. Meanwhile, the Democratic Republic of Congo has also reported a separate outbreak of an unrelated strain of Ebola.

The United State, Spain, Germany, Norway, France, Italy, Switzerland and the UK have all treated cases contracted in West Africa, and the United States and Spain have dealt with a case or two who had contracted the disease by contact with an infected person.

The rate of new cases may be declining at the moment.

“And there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.” Matthew 24:7
