A major shift is underway in Australia’s Liberal Party toward same-sex marriage. Eleven MPs have quietly and privately switched to supporting so-called “marriage equality” since the beginning of the year. Only a few Liberal MPs have publically supported same-sex marriage. “Marriage equality” advocates say that there is now a significant change underway inside the party.
“Since the beginning of the year, 11 Coalition MPs and senators have privately indicated to us they have switched to supporting marriage equality from being opposed or undecided,” said Australian Marriage Equality national director Rodney Croome. “It is still hard to be sure exactly what the numbers are, but the trend is clear.”
Prime Minister Tony Abbott still is strongly opposed to same-sex marriage, and members of his party aren’t willing to come out publically in support because they don’t want to undermine Abbott’s authority.
The issue is heating up. Same-sex marriage advocates have been bombarding MPs with emails in support of gay marriage, while opponents are doing the same.
Keep the Faith has been saying for a long time, that inevitably, the Australian coalition government will eventually support same-sex marriage. Australia is likely to follow New Zealand and other nations in approving same-sex marriage. It is just a matter of time.
