On September 19, 2014, Pope Francis met the President of the Republic of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan. They discussed the problems facing Christians in the Middle East and the humanitarian crisis there. The discussion highlighted the role of the Catholic Church in the history and life of the Armenian society and the common efforts of religious communities to achieve peace.
As usual for visiting dignitaries, after meeting with Pope Francis, President Sargsyan met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, and Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for Relations with States.
