The Vatican has announced that Pope Francis will visit Armenia June 24-26 following the invitation of Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, Karekin II, the nation’s civil authorities, and the Catholic Church
“I promised the three (Armenian) Patriarchs that I would go,” Said the Pope. “The promise has been made. I don’t know if it will be possible, but I did promise.”
Francis is the second pontiff to visit Armenia. John Paul II visited the nation in 2001.
Also the Holy See Press Office said that the pope will visit the nations of Georgia and Azerbaijan after receiving invitations from Ilia II, Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia as well as the civil and religious authorities of Georgia and Azerbaijan. John Paul II also visited these two countries in 1999 and 2002 respectively.
