In August 2014, Target, the giant retail chain announced that it supports gay marriage. It signed an amicus (friend of the court) brief.
“It is our belief that everyone should be treated equally under the law, and that includes rights we believe individuals should have related to marriage,” said Target Executive Vice President Jodee Kozlak in a statement.
Target was one of a group of national companies that signed the amicus brief, which they filed in a Wisconsin appeals court that also includes a similar Indiana case. The higher court is reviewing the lower court decisions that struck down the gay marriage bans in those states.
The decision comes after years of criticism for Target’s neutrality. Kozlak said that the decision involved both ideological and economical aspects, including the inconsistent laws nationwide, adding that “at Target we are proud to support the LGBTcommunity.”
