And 18-year-old German Iranian man shot and killed nine people plus himself. He also wounded 16 others at a shopping mall in Munich in an attack about 6 pm on Friday evening July 22. Apparently he lured people to the McDonald’s restaurant by telling them they would get something free, which many thought would be food. As people fled, the gunman, using a pistol calmly surveyed the street and then indiscriminately opened fire on them.
Police believe he acted alone as he pumped bullets into people in a prolonged attack at the restaurant and nearby shopping mall.
While there was no immediate evidence of an Islamist or other terrorist motive, the attacker’s Iranian background is certainly being investigated. But a furious and abusive exchange with a by-stander in which both men swore at each other multiple times, may have stoked him and pushed him over the edge and committed him to the rampage. “I am German,” angrily shouted the attacker.
The attack comes in the wake of the Bastille Day truck attack in Nice and an attack by another teenager with an ax on a train in Southern Germany.
A 15-year-old girl was among those killed, and at least 16 people, including several children, were in hospital, three in critical condition. The gunman’s body was found in a side street close to the mall.
Police locked down the transit system including trains, busses and trams and closed highways to private cars. They ordered people to stay in their homes as they search for suspected killers. False rumors of fresh attacks sent panic through the city, as police systematically searched the mall, releasing hidden workers and shoppers taking several hours.
A police spokesman said: “If a man with a gun in a shopping centre opens fire and eight people are dead, we have to work on the assumption that this was not a normal crime and was a terrorist act.”
Boris Johnson, Britain’s new foreign secretary, said, “If, as seems very likely, this is another terrorist incident, then I think it proves once again that we have a global phenomenon now and a global sickness that we have to tackle both at source – in the areas where the cancer is being incubated in the Middle East – and also of course around the world.”
As God’s holy spirit is being gradually withdrawn, the wicked become more violent. This and many other violent murders and crimes are only a glimpse of what is to come when the Holy Spirit is finally completely withdrawn from the impenitent.
“Troublous times are right upon us. The signs of the times reveal that the day of the Lord is soon to come. The daily papers are full of indications of a terrible conflict in the near future. Strikes are common. Thefts and murders are committed on every hand. Men possessed by demons are killing men and women and little children. The taking of human life is a matter of daily occurrence. All these things testify that the end of all things is at hand. The powers of earth are stirred with an intensity from beneath; and the Lord sends to His people the warning, “Heaven and earth shall pass away; but My word shall not pass away. And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come on you unawares. For as a snare shall it come on all that dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.” Australian Union Conference Record, January 15, 1904
