“France cannot do everything at once,” said the French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian. He was requesting military assistance from his EU partners. The French army is going in many different directions. It is waging an air war against the “Islamic State” in Syria; it is also beefing up its domestic presence in response to the recent attacks in Paris. Furthermore, about 7,000 French soldiers are tied up in foreign operations like Mali.
Though the German military, the Bundeswehr, is quite stretched with some of its forces in Mali, many in NATO maneuvers in Eastern Europe, shortages in supplies and equipment, and its activities in accommodating refugees in Germany.
In any case, the German government wants to show support to its French friends. “Germany will carefully analyze France’s request, Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said, adding that there had been no concrete requests for help. ‘But of course, we will do everything in our power to provide assistance and support.’”
But Germany does not have the resources to conduct direct intervention in Syria, though it has stated clearly that it will help.
