Russia recently implemented new anti-sodomy legislation ahead of the Olympic Winter Games, and the International Olympic Committee IOC is “cross” with Russia for doing so. The law bans “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations.” It imposes fines on those who hold gay-pride rallies. President Putin defended the new law was designed to protect children from “distorted understanding” of sexuality and “harmful” promotion of homosexuality to minors.
The IOC is very gay-friendly and is demanding that the Russians must respect the human rights of athletes. The IOC has asked for clarification and “re-assurances” that the law will not entangle Olympians, their support teams or their guests in legal problems during the Olympics.
The Russian Sports Minister insisted that his government would not back down under political pressure, saying Sochi competitors must respect the laws. Meanwhile, the Russian Interior Ministry has assured the IOC that homosexual athletes and their guests would not be affected so long as they do not commit acts that promote non-traditional sexual relations.
“The law enforcement agencies can have no qualms with people who harbor a nontraditional sexual orientation and do not commit such acts [to promote homosexuality to minors], do not conduct any kind of provocation and take part in the Olympics peacefully,” said an Interior Ministry statement.
In the future, some IOC leaders are suggesting that the way cities handle gays and lesbians so-called “rights” will be considered in the bidding for the Olympic games.
