One day after the British House of Commons approved a same-sex marriage bill Queen Elizabeth II signed it into law. The new law permits same-sex couples to marry in religious and civil ceremonies.
Gay and lesbian couples already had the option to enter into “civil partnership” in Britain with almost all the same rights as marriage. Already 500,000 partnerships have been registered.
Religious clerics are not required to perform the marriages for same-sex couples. They must “opt in” to perform them. The Church of England bans the ceremonies at this point and some other denominations are opposed.
Britain joins France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain and Portugal in the European Union.
