NATO has announced that it would send four multinational battalions of up to 1000 troops each to Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, all high-tension areas since Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. The military buildup is the largest since the end of the cold war.
“This will send a clear signal that NATO stands ready to defend an ally. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.
The four countries have long requested additional troops because they are concerned about Russia’s increased military presence in Crimea on the strategically important Black Sea.
Bulgaria and Romania, both NATO allies are also asking for more troops in the region, and to expand NATO’s naval presence in the Black Sea. Meanwhile the U.S. has started what it calls “European Reassurance Initiative,” a $3.4 billion dollar plan to pre-position military equipment in Poland, the Baltic States, and Central Europe. It also plans to triple NATO’s 40,000-troop response force.
Russia blames its buildup in Crimea on the U.S. ballistic missile shield, which the U.S. says has been installed in Eastern Europe to protect NATO countries from Iran.
Self-defense is often an excuse to prepare for aggression. Both Russia and the West have been building up military capabilities in Eastern Europe and central Asia.
While the NATO movements in Europe may not be enough to engage in a full-scale war, it is however, a big step forward.
“And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. Matthew 24:6
“Although I carry a heavy burden for the work in Australia and America, yet I also have a thankful heart for the mercy and gracious loving kindness of my God. Notwithstanding the fact that there is war and bloodshed, and nations are preparing for battle, thanksgiving should arise from our hearts because the Sun of Righteousness never sets. The mightiest earthly potentates may be engaged in battle for the supremacy, but the children of God, whose life is hid with Christ, in God have nothing to fear. Their refuge is safe and sure.” The Kress Collection, page 125, 126
