House Republican Reads Bible, Some Fellow Republicans Walk Out

Wednesday June 1st, 2016

U.S. Representative Rick Allen, (R-GA) suggested that dozens of his fellow Republicans sinned by backing an anti-discrimination proposal against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. He read a Bible verse condemning homosexuality and suggested that the bill’s supporters defied Christian tenets at the beginning of a GOP regular policy meeting in the Capitol basement. The bill had been passed the night before.

Several Republicans walked out of the room in disgust. “It was *@!$*# ridiculous,” said one GOP lawmaker, who used fowl language. A GOP leadership aide offered a similar verdict. “A lot of members were clearly uncomfortable and upset,” the aide said.

Representative Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY) introduced the amendment to an energy bill that included the LGBT language that said “nothing in the underlying spending bills can undermine President Obama’s executive order barring discrimination by government contractors based on sexual orientation or gender identity.”

The amendment had passed, but the broader bill was crushingly defeated as the amendment acted like a poison pill on the floor the next day, leading to accusations that the Democrats were playing games.

LGBT rights continue to take a high political profile in the United States. When the Bible is treated with disrespect by its lawmakers, America is rapidly sinking toward “The Vale of Sodom.”

“The apostasy prevailing today is similar to that which in the prophet’s day overspread Israel. In the exaltation of the human above the divine, in the praise of popular leaders, in the worship of mammon, and in the placing of the teachings of science above the truths of revelation, multitudes today are following after Baal. Doubt and unbelief are exercising their baleful influence over mind and heart, and many are substituting for the oracles of God the theories of men. It is publicly taught that we have reached a time when human reason should be exalted above the teachings of the Word. The law of God, the divine standard of righteousness, is declared to be of no effect. The enemy of all truth is working with deceptive power to cause men and women to place human institutions where God should be, and to forget that which was ordained for the happiness and salvation of mankind.” Prophets and Kings, Pages 170 and 171

“Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.” Isaiah 1:4
