For the first time in 450 years, a Roman Catholic service is to be celebrated in the Chapel Royal at Hampton Court Palace in London. Cardinal Archbishop Nichols of Westminster will celebrate Vespers. It will be the first Latin rite service of the Catholic Church celebrated since the 1550s in the chapel, and is being described as “an unprecedented coming together of the Catholic and Anglican churches on such an historically important site.”
The chapel was built by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in the early 16th century, but was taken from Wolsey by Henry VIII and rebuilt. Henry broke with Rome over the papal refusal to annul his marriage to Catherine of Argon.
“We need to recognize that we have more in common than not,” said John Studzinski, the founder and chairman of the Genesis Foundation, which was instrumental in organizing the event.
And Great Britain “wondered after.” See Revelation 13:3.
