The Jewish Reconstructionist movement recently elected a gay man to lead the national association at its meeting in New Orleans. Rabbi Jason Klein, from Maryland has become the first openly gay man to lead the rabbinic association. Though Reconstructionist (the smallest and newest rabbinical association) and Reform seminaries have ordained gay rabbis for decades, and the Conservative movement opened their seminaries to gays in 2006, no rabbinic association of any of the other Jewish denominations in the U.S. have ever been led by a gay man. Orthodox seminaries and rabbinic associations still ban gays.
