Most of us love avocados. Guacamole, a favorite dip or spread, is made from avocados. Avocados can be spread on bread, used in certain pies, chopped into salads, etc. Avocados are a super food that may well be anti-cancer because of all the cancer fighting elements that are in them.
An avocado contains lutein (a carotenoid along with Vitamin E), Magnesium, and healthy fats called monounsaturated fats. The carotenoid lutein in the avocado fights cancer of the mouth, breast, and prostate. It also helps to improve absorption of other nutrients. High quantities of lutein are also found in kale, broccoli and spinach.
Avocados have phytochemicals too, which are bioactive compounds resident in the avocado fruit. Phytochemicals fight a lot of major chronic diseases as well as cancer. Avocados naturally have vitamin E, an antioxidant, which have a protective effect especially against breast cancer.
Glutathione, the body’s master antioxidant is also found in avocado. Glutathione in the liver helps it to detoxify the body and protect cells from oxidative stress.
Avocados are also primarily a source of oleic acid, a healthy monounsaturated fat, which helps to lower unhealthy LDL plaque forming cholesterol. Lowering harmful cholesterol in conjunction with body fat, in turn, leads to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, reduced inflammation and reduced risk of cancer. Oleic acid is also found in olives, olive oil, walnuts, almonds and pine nuts.
The average avocado contains only 12.5 mg of fat and 235 calories. Avocados should not be considered a fattening food when consumed as part of a healthy meal. One cup of avocado also contains as much as 30 percent of your daily fiber intake as well as significant amounts of Vitamin K, Potassium, Folate, and Vitamin B6, which are all important to normal healthy cell function and cancer prevention.
“Let food be your medicine” Hippocrates (the Father of Medicine).
The grains, with fruits, nuts, and vegetables, contain all the nutritive properties necessary to make good blood. These elements are not so well or so fully supplied by a flesh diet. Had the use of flesh been essential to health and strength, animal food would have been included in the diet appointed man in the beginning.
