On May 25, 2013 a coordinated world-wide protest against chemical giant Monsanto was held in 52 countries and 436 cities. In Los Angeles demonstrators waved signs that read “Real Food 4 Real People” and “Label GMOs, Its Our Right to Know.”
Since the 1980’s, Monsanto has been producing seed that is genetically modified to contain pesticides and herbicides within the DNA of the seed. In some cases human and/or animal genes have been “spliced,” or more accurately, injected, into the DNA of the seed. These GM plants can withstand stronger doses of weed killers that use glyphosate, some of which remains on the food when shipped to market.
While the companies that develop GM plants and the weed killers argue that there is no serious health risks to those who eat foods contaminated with glyphosate, there are studies that are now showing that glyphosate inhibits enzymes essential to digestion, and also causes changes in the way carbohydrates are stored in the body. The increasing concern among scientists and others involves the link between glyphosate and various diseases and conditions. The link between GM foods and autism, for instance, is becoming clearer in some of these studies.
Another concern is that some of the GM molecules can turn off certain genes in the plants. They also can turn off matching genes in humans.
The main GM crops are corn (95% GM), soy (85% GM), cotton, canola (from rape seed). Other GM crops are sugar beets, wheat (which may account for gluten allergies), cotton, alfalfa, zucchini and yellow crook neck squash. Monsanto is working on other crops as well.
Milk has been genetically modified using recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) designed to increase the cow’s milk production. The rBGH hormone is ingested by those who consume the milk products (milk, butter, cheese, ice cream, yogurt, etc.). It has been noted that children are becoming obese and developing prematurely and going into puberty earlier than normal.
God gave Israel specific instructions concerning the seeds used in agriculture. He said, “Thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed…” Leviticus 19:19
The only way to avoid GM food is to buy only organically grown foods and avoid animal products. While a “vegan” diet (no animal products) will avoid the problems with dairy and meat, we have come to a time when non-organically grown vegetables and fruits are increasingly likely to be unsafe.
