Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was invited to the Vatican April 15, to give a speech at a conference at the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences on the economy and social justice. Sanders, a Jew, emphasized “the common good.”
“I’m so excited and proud to be here with other people who are trying to create a moral economy,” Sanders said. He also praised the Catholic Church’s teachings on the economy, saying he admires the pope for his views on income inequality and greed.
After a debate in New York with Democratic front-runner, Hilary Clinton, Sanders flew to Rome for the conference.
Sanders, who often quotes the pope in Congress, on the campaign trail and other places, said inequality, injustice and pollution are causing “devastating” problems.” Speaking outside the Vatican, Sanders said, “Our youth are no longer satisfied with corrupt and broken politics and an economy of stark inequality and injustice.” Youth want a “return to fairness” and assurance that everyone has access to health care, nutrition and education.
“We invited the candidate who cites the pope the most in his campaign…” said Bishop Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo, the academy’s chancellor.
Sanders was also granted a five-minute audience with Pope Francis and discussed the need to inject morality and justice into the world economy, a view he and the pope share. They met in the lobby of the Santa Marta hotel as the pope was leaving for his recent trip to Greece.
“I told him that I was incredibly appreciative of the incredible role that he is playing in this planet in discussing issues about the need for an economy based on morality, not greed,” Sanders said.
Sanders and his wife, Jane, even stayed overnight at the papal residence, in the Domus Santa Marta hotel in the Vatican gardens on the same floor as Pope Francis.
In an interview with ABC News after the meeting, Sanders called the pope “a beautiful man”, adding, “I am not a Catholic, but there is a radiance that comes from him.”
“I just conveyed to him my admiration for the extraordinary work he is doing raising some of the most important issues facing our planet and the billions of people on the planet and injecting the need for morality in the global economy,” Sanders said.
Naturally, Pope Francis said that his meeting with Sanders was not meddling in politics and that anyone who thought otherwise should “look for a psychiatrist.” Sanders has said the trip was not a pitch for the Catholic vote but a testament to his admiration for the pontiff.
