In the wake of the surprise electoral victory of Donald Trump, Berlin sees an opportunity to push for an EU military structure including European nuclear armed forces. Wolfgang Ischinger, the chairman of the Munich Security Conference is “hoping” that the “Trump shock” has “dramatically increased” the willingness among European leaders to militarize the European Union. Recently, the European Parliament adopted a resolution that includes establishing an EU Operational Headquarters and a “political leadership” for EU military operations, and raising the military budgets of all member states to 2% of GDP. Leading politicians and commentators are beginning to accept the idea of an “EU Superpower” with nuclear military forces.
EU countries must agree to a “European defense union with tightly enmeshed armed forces” and “a consolidated procurement and armaments system,” said Ischinger. In this way, “a great deal of money could soon be saved and considerable supplementary combat power generated.” The objective is “to finally do the job right to bring the EU – also militarily – into the 21st Century… Germany must insist on the EU becoming a global player in an insecure world,” he added.
However, the EU “without the Alliance and the American nuclear umbrella,” currently “cannot be defended.” So, the United States is still “needed, even with this president.” Therefore, Berlin and Brussels should work to influence Trump even before the inauguration.
Berlin believes that because “the political priorities of NATO and the EU may not always be identical,” the EU must be capable of independently waging wars. The EU Parliament therefore “warmly welcomes the strategic autonomy concept.” Roderich Kiesewetter, foreign policy spokesman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, demanded that Berlin convince Paris and London to provide a “nuclear umbrella” for the EU. Kiesewetter made this proposal previously in the USA, prior to the elections, but found an open ear only since Trump’s electoral victory.
The EU’s militarization campaign, now legitimized and accelerated following Donald Trump’s election, is continuing. When Germany and the EU become militarized, the regionalization of the ancient Holy Roman Empire will be nearly complete.
