While Europe and the British Isles known for its lack of “revival” activity, there is a charismatic movement in Portsmouth England that is having an enormous impact. Run by Steven Halford who is pastor of the Holy Trinity Brompton Anglican Church, seat of the infamous ecumenical and spiritualistic alpha course, Brompton has become a key epicenter of the English charismatic movement. Halford, whose mother became part of the Alpha Program, which was developed at Brompton and spread throughout the world from there, is married to an American and is a gifted street preacher and evangelist.
The Anglican Church is the official church of which Queen Elizabeth II is the titular head. The Archbishop of Canterbury, the ecumenical Justin Welby, who claims to be “Spirit-filled” and who speaks in tongues is involved in the charismatic movement as well.
While the Anglican Church embraces gay marriage and has lost many members to the Catholic Church and to secularism, the charismatic movement is starting to make new inroads into Anglicanism. When a church, like the Anglican Communion largely abandons the Bible, it will inevitably lose its spiritual footing. In order to maintain a semblance of piety, it embraces the charismatic movement, in order to keep it “alive.”
In May the Anglican Church collaborated with modern Charismatics in front of Winchester Cathedral at an event called “tent on the green” for three days of prayer and praise and some evangelistic outreach. It seems that the only way to keep these old churches doors open, the false revival must come in. In bleak times, God’s people need to press together in the word, not in cheap substitutes.
“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.” 2 Timothy 3:5
“To the law and to the testimony. If they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” [Isaiah 8:20.] The people of God are directed to the Scriptures as their safeguard against the influence of false teachers and the delusive power of spirits of darkness. Satan employs every possible device to prevent men from obtaining a knowledge of the Bible; for its plain utterances reveal his deceptions.” The Great Controversy, page 593
