“Pope Francis is more popular than any political world leader,” according to a new opinion poll, said the BBC.
The pole, conducted by WIN/Gallup International questioned 1,000 people in 64 countries, suggested that he is the most popular political leader with the difference between a favorable and an unfavorable rating at 41%, while Obama was 30% and David Cameron, Britain’s Prime Minister was pegged at 10% difference. The pole put Pope Francis global popularity ahead of Barack Obama by 11 points. More than half of global Protestants, atheists and agnostics view him favorably.
Roman Catholics view the pope with 85% popularity while 9% didn’t know, and only 6% unfavorable. Among Jews many of whom are Sabbath keepers, 65% are favorable, 18% don’t know and 17% are unfavorable.
The highest percentage of favorability regionally around the world is 77% in Latin America, followed by North America at 63%, while West Asia is only 12%. Though Europe is only at 55% favorability, the country with the most enthusiasm for the pope is European; Portugal at 94% favorability.
By contrast, the other end of the scale is Azerbaijan, with 87% of the population doesn’t even know who the pope is.
