On his first day in Cuba, Pope Francis urged the United States and Cuba to set an example for the world by deepening their ties. Pope Francis helped secretly broker the rapprochement between the former Cold War foes.
“I urge political leaders to persevere on this path and to develop all its potentialities … as an example of reconciliation for the entire world,” he said at the airport on his arrival.
The 78-year-old pontiff facilitated reconciliation between the two nations by back channel contacts, secret talks and even sent letters to both Presidents Raul Castro and Barack Obama at the right moment in the negotiations.
Now the nations have opened embassies, swapped prisoners, eased travel and trade restrictions, even though the economic embargo is still technically in place.
Watch for more diplomatic action as Pope Francis leverages his popularity to gain more power for the Vatican.
“For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.” Revelation 18:3
