During his weekly Wednesday general audience, August 12, Pope Francis again promoted the idea that Sunday is the day of rest in contradiction to scripture.
“The obsession with economic profit and technical efficiency puts the human rhythms of life at risk. Moments of rest, especially on Sunday, are sacred because in them we find God…”
Francis is in the midst of a series of catecheses presentations on the Family on celebration, work and prayer. “Celebration is a precious gift from God. It’s a precious gift God has made for the human family. Let’s not ruin it,” the Pope said.
Linking celebration to the seventh day of the week, the pope said that rest and celebration are Gods’ own invention at creation. But in spite of the scriptures, the pope nevertheless pointed to Sundays, not the seventh day Bible Sabbath, as a particularly important time for rest,” because “in them we find God.”
God teaches us the importance “of dedicating time [for] contemplating and enjoying the fruits of our labors, not only in our employment or profession, but through every action by which we as men and women cooperate in God’s creative work,” he said.
True moments of celebration make us take a break from the daily grind and remind us that we have been created in the image and likeness of God, who is not a slave of work, but the Lord of work, the Pope observed.
An over-emphasis on gain and technical efficiency “attacks human rhythms of life and denies man the time for what’s really important,” he said, explaining that God wants to set us free from these vices.
This of course is what God intended the seventh-day Sabbath to accomplish. But the pope thinks that he can change God’s law and accomplish the same thing on Sunday. And while there would be some benefits to resting on Sunday, breaking God’s Sabbath is still a violation of God’s law.
“May we always recognize the family as the privileged place to understand, guide and sustain the gifts, which arise from our celebrations, especially the Sunday Eucharist,” he concluded.
By advocating first day rest instead of seventh day rest, Pope Francis is speaking against God, His law and His clearly revealed will. The Pope’s moral voice is very strong globally. When circumstances are right, his appeal to Sunday rest will eventually lead to Sunday laws with oppresive measures on those who refuse to obey them in deference to God’s law.
“And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.” Daniel 7:25
