Another Prominent Evangelical says we are Near the End

Friday June 5th, 2015
Print This Post Print This Post

Anne Graham Lotz, 67, the daughter of retired Evangelist Billy Graham and best-selling author, said on May 20, “our world is unraveling” and that “we’re coming close to the end of human history.”

Speaking on Fox News Radio’s Alan Colmes Show, Lotz answered the question whether she believes that we are at the end times now. “I believe that it is, Alan. I base that not just on feelings, I base it on what Jesus said in the New Testament and what I see going on in the world at the same time – and they match,” Lotz remarked. “So I put that together and I believe we’re coming close to the end of human history as we know it,” she said. “With that comes accountability before God, which we would call a judgment.”

Lotz, author of 11 books and recipient of six honorary doctorates in ministry and biblical exegesis, explained how she knows it is the end times. “I read my Bible… and then I line up God’s Word with what I see happening in the world, and they come together… Our world is unraveling. I think the whole world senses, especially those who follow the news, senses that something is happening that is very unsettling.”

You don’t need doctorates in ministry in biblical exegesis to know that we are at the end times. In fact, it is often the theologians and so-called biblical scholars that scoff at the idea that we are at the end times and try to explain away the clear evidence of scripture.

Speaking of God’s judgments Lotz said, “God’s judgment is not necessarily like a nuclear strike or lightning coming from the sky or the ground opening up. It is just [that] God backs away from us. He removes His hand that’s been protecting us and restraining evil,” she said. “When He removes it, because we’ve been telling Him to get out, then life can’t go on as it has. It begins to collapse.” He removes His protection “when we don’t repent of our sin, when we rebel against Him.”

“There’s a separation of church and state,” Lotz continued, “but that’s not a separation of state and God. Our Founding Fathers believed in God and they honored God and they respected God, and until the 1900s the Bible was a textbook in schools. And so when you begin to remove God, and you know we have been, He backs away.”

New York Times has described Lotz as one of the five most influential evangelists in the United States. Credible evangelical voices are increasingly suggesting that we are near the end of time. In her gentle way, influential Lotz is laying the foundation for eventual demands for a Sunday law to get the nation back to God.

“The present is a time of overwhelming interest to all living. Rulers and statesmen, men who occupy positions of trust and authority, thinking men and women of all classes, have their attention fixed upon the events taking place about us. They are watching the strained, restless relations that exist among the nations. They observe the intensity that is taking possession of every earthly element, and they recognize that something great and decisive is about to take place–that the world is on the verge of a stupendous crisis.” Education, page 179

    As a Seventh-day Adventist and firm believer that Jesus really is soon to come, this made my mouth fall open! I find it mildly ironic that the words “gentle” and “demands” are used in the same sentence in relation to Ms. Lotz’s desires for a Sunday law. In my opinion, there is nothing gentle about placing a demand on others to compel them to observe a day of the week as a day of worship for which there is no Biblical command by God. Go back to the end of the Creation Week in Genesis and you’ll see that there is only one day of the week that God blessed, sanctified, and hallowed as a day of rest. It is the seventh day, and furthermore, it is the only day of the week that God actually named. He named it Sabbath and it is stipulated as the 4th Commandment wherein God commands us to “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy . . .”

    Nevertheless, to compel/demand Sunday worship is to walk in step with Rome because Rome/the Catholic Church is the author of Sunday/1st day worship, NOT GOD. The Great Controversy by EGW said it would be like this and that these days would come. They are on the way which means that Jesus is even at the door.

    Come quickly Lord Jesus!

      It would be hard to argue that there is a demanding environment at the moment for a Sunday law though in some circles there appears to be a rising debate. People don’t seem frantic enough yet. Lotz is a gentle person, apparently. She is not demanding a Sunday law at the moment. But nevertheless, her comments could well be laying the foundation for a demand for worship laws eventually. We try to be careful not to overstate something that we cannot document. Also, by our comments, we may have given the impression that Lotz desires a Sunday law. Even if that were true, we cannot prove it from the source article, so it would be best not to draw conclusions that are unwarranted, unless there are other sources to support it. Having said that, however, she does have the “separation of church and state” on her mind, and it is apparent that she believes that it is not being interpreted the way it should be. And we know where removal of the “wall of separation” will go. We did not mean to misrepresent the source article.

    Ellen White comments, Protestantism shall give the hand of fellowship to the Roman power. Then there will be a law against the Sabbath of God’s creation, and then it is that God will do His “strange work” in the earth.–7BC 910 (1886). {LDE 130.1}

    How the Roman church can clear herself from the charge of idolatry we cannot see. . . . And this is the religion which Protestants are beginning to look upon with so much favor, and which will eventually be united with Protestantism. This union will not, however, be effected by a change in Catholicism, for Rome never changes. She claims infallibility. It is Protestantism that will change. The adoption of liberal ideas on its part will bring it where it can clasp the hand of Catholicism.–RH June 1, 1886. {LDE 130.2}

    The professed Protestant world will form a confederacy with the man of sin, and the church and the world will be in corrupt harmony.–7BC 975 (1891). {LDE 130.3}

    Romanism in the Old World, and apostate Protestantism in the New, will pursue a similar course toward those who honor all the divine precepts.–GC 616 (1911). {LDE 130.4}
