The Daily Express U.S., by Daniel Smith: The US has reportedly urged Pacific allies to prepare for potential conflict with China over Taiwan, as Japan signals the dawn of a ‘new crisis era’ and Beijing appears to be ramping up its military technology investments.
Taiwan is viewed by China as a breakaway province, claiming sovereignty over the island despite its independent democratic government, which is recognized globally.
Tensions have escalated since late 2020 due to China’s ‘grey zone tactics’, including intensified military drills near Taiwan and an increase in Chinese military aircraft and naval presence in the area. It comes as Fox News fans declare it’s the ‘end of MAGA’ as Donald Trump loses it in press conference.
While the US has historically pledged support for Taiwan through military, economic, and diplomatic means, this stance wavered under President Donald Trump.
A recent Financial Times report suggests that the US remains committed to defending Taiwan but expects regional allies like Japan and Australia to be prepared to share the burden in the event of war, reports the Mirror US.
The US is pushing these nations to boost defense spending as a countermeasure against any aggressive actions from China.
An unnamed US official emphasized: “We do not seek war. Nor do we seek to dominate China itself. What we are doing is ensuring the United States and its allies have the military strength to underwrite diplomacy and guarantee peace.
“We are coming to our allies in the Indo-Pacific, very similar to what the president did in Europe, and saying this is the threat environment.
“Obviously, some of these are tough conversations, including on defense spending. But we think it will leave us all in a better place.”
Japan this week issued stern warnings regarding China’s rapid escalation of military operations across vast territories stretching from its southwestern shores to the Pacific, characterizing these actions as the most significant strategic challenge.
Beijing’s expanding collaborative efforts with Russia also present grave security risks to Japan, alongside mounting tensions surrounding Taiwan and dangers emanating from North Korea, according to the Defense Ministry’s annual military assessment delivered to the Cabinet on Tuesday.
“The international society is in a new crisis era as it faces the biggest challenges since the end of World War II,” the document stated, highlighting major shifts in the global power structure while expressing alarm about intensifying China-US competition.
