El Papa Francisco visitó la Iglesia Valdense en Turín y en un momento impactante y emotivo, pidió a los valdenses que perdonaran a la Iglesia Católica por su persecución histórica y brutal ocurrida en la Edad Media. Francisco es el primer Papa que entra en una iglesia valdense.
«De parte de la Iglesia Católica, les pido perdón, lo pido por las actitudes y comportamientos no cristianos e incluso inhumanos que mostramos», dijo el Papa Francisco. «En el nombre del Señor Jesucristo, ¡perdónenos!»
Antes de las declaraciones del Papa, el pastor Eugenio Bernardini, líder de la comunidad valdense en Turín, preguntó por qué la iglesia había sido rechazada por Roma. «¿Cuál fue el pecado de los valdenses?», preguntó. «Se estaba realizando un movimiento de evangelización popular, llevado a cabo por los laicos mediante la predicación itinerante de la Biblia, leída y explicada en el lenguaje de la gente.»
En sus palabras, Bernardini, quien también es moderador de la Junta Valdense, enumeró los representantes de otras iglesias presentes incluyendo metodistas, luteranos, bautistas y adventistas.
Como moderador de la Junta Valdense, quiero darle las gracias, en particular, por las palabras de fraternidad que ha expresado en repetidas ocasiones hacia nuestra Iglesia. Al entrar a este templo, ha cruzado un umbral histórico, un muro que se levantó hace más de ocho siglos, cuando el movimiento valdense fue acusado de herejía y excomulgado de la Iglesia Romana».
«Creemos que la unidad cristiana puede y debe ser diseñada precisamente para: reconciliar la diversidad…», añadió. «Este es precisamente el ecumenismo: el fin de las auto-iglesias; cada iglesia necesita de la otra para cumplir con su llamado», continuó Bernardini. «No podemos ser solo cristianos».
El moderador también dio una lista de colaboraciones entre las dos iglesias.
«Creemos que las relaciones entre la Iglesia Valdense… y la Iglesia Católica Romana, ya han dado buenos resultados en varios campos», incluyendo la traducción inter-confesional de la Biblia en lengua vernácula (LBA), la Semana de Oración por la Unidad de los Cristianos, la colaboración cristiana a nivel de facultades de teología, la colaboración en la formulación de la Carta Ecuménica y el documento común entre católicos y evangélicos ortodoxos firmado el pasado 9 de marzo para combatir la violencia contra la mujer, etc.»
También incluyó significativamente la Eucaristía, núcleo de la agenda ecuménica católica romana. «Entre las cosas que tenemos en común son el pan y el vino de la Última Cena y las palabras que Jesús pronunció en esa ocasión. Las interpretaciones de estas palabras son diferentes entre las iglesias y dentro de cada uno de ellos. Pero lo que une a los cristianos reunidos alrededor de la mesa de Jesús son el pan y el vino, y Sus palabras, y no las interpretaciones que ofrecemos…»
Entonces instando para que la Eucaristía sea el tema de las celebraciones del fin del protestantismo en el 2017, Bernardini dijo: «Sería bueno si, en vista del 2017, nuestras iglesias enfrentan juntas este tema.»
Para concluir dijo: «Y es nuestro verdadero mandato ecuménico, querido hermano Francisco: que por encima de todo, seamos uno para la proclamación de la Palabra y para que el mundo crea» (Juan 17:21). Querido Papa Francisco, gracias por estar con nosotros. Dios bendiga e ilumine su servicio».
Las observaciones del Papa Francisco también reflejan la unidad en la diversidad. Dijo que el beneficio principal del ecumenismo «es el redescubrimiento de la fraternidad que une a todos los que creen en Jesucristo y son bautizados en Su Nombre.» Y añadió: «Pero la unidad que es el fruto del Espíritu Santo no significa uniformidad. Los hermanos tienen un origen en común pero no son idénticos entre sí”.
Los antepasados del papa Francisco provienen de la región ubicada alrededor de Turín, donde los antiguos valdenses vivían antes de ser perseguidos. Algunos de los familiares de Francisco todavía viven en esta zona. Después de la visita al templo valdense, él se reunió con sus familiares y celebró la misa con aproximadamente 30 miembros de su familia, incluyendo seis primos y sus familias. No obstante, los valdenses se oponían fuertemente contra la misa en la Edad Media.
Los valdenses afirman tener actualmente 45 mil seguidores, sobre todo en Italia, Argentina y Uruguay.

But it was actually the Pope that was begging; begging forgiveness of the Waldenses, not the Waldenses begging forgiveness of the pope. That may come later, but for now, the papal charisma and popularity has the protestants googly-eyed and blinded. They are marching back to Rome, but Rome has opened her arms wide to bring everyone into her fold. They don’t have to do much begging, at least for now. The noose will tighten however. Pr. Mayer
