The Illegal Trial and Crucifixion of Christ, Part 4
By Pastor Hal Mayer
Dear friends,
Welcome to Keep the Faith Ministry once again. We are living in serious times. The wicked Sanhedrin have their anti-type today. We actually have to be ready for anything.
Hebrews 3:1, 2.
Do you remember the reason why the Great Sanhedrin; the Pharisees and the Sadducees, hated Jesus so much that they determined to kill Him? The main reason was that He exposed them for their unfaithfulness and hypocrisy, especially in Sabbath keeping. Jesus was persecuted because He did not keep the Sabbath to suit the leaders in His days on earth.
Although Lord of the Sabbath Himself, yet He was denounced as a “Sabbath-breaker,” was spied upon, persecuted and rejected, and a robber and murderer was chosen in His stead. He was crucified, because He would not conform to the narrow, bigoted ideas of the Sabbath held by the Pharisees, scribes, and doctors of the law.
And when the time of trouble comes upon us, we will have Pharisees, scribes, chief priests, and doctors of the law making such a great stir, spying upon us and persecuting, and denouncing people as “Sabbath-breakers” who are actually Sabbath keepers, all with the intent to silence their voices and/or imprison them. Those who follow Christ closely and who live according to His lifelong example, according to the plainest words of scripture, will experience similar things to Jesus. So, we better study the life and example of Jesus Christ as we are advised to do.
As the scripture in Hebrews tells us, the one thing for us all to do is consider Jesus Christ. Everything you need to know for your life you can get by considering Jesus in His life. If you want to hold out and be faithful, consider Christ Jesus who was faithful and draw from Him faithfulness. We are to draw from Him faithfulness and every other virtue. He is to be unto us faithfulness too, just as He is to be unto us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption. Hebrews 3:1, 2.
“Wherefore… Consider the apostle and high priest of our profession, Jesus Christ, who was faithful to him that appointed him…”
This verse begins with “wherefore,” that is, for this reason; and the other reason is expressed in the previous chapter, in the 17th verse.
“Wherefore in all things it behooved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that he Himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to sucker them that are tempted.” “wherefore,” that is, for this reason, “consider the apostle and high priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; Who was faithful.”
We are to consider His faithfulness in connection with the Sabbath of the Lord, and its keeping, if we want to be faithful in the keeping of it. In this connection, when the Bible speaks of the Sabbath it is referring to Christ and His Sabbath keeping. And when the Bible speaks of Christ it is referring also to His faithfulness in Sabbath keeping. The Sabbath is the Lord’s own sign of what Jesus Christ is to men; and we are to consider Him in respect to it, and His faithfulness in keeping it.
That means we will consider His faithfulness in keeping the Sabbath under persecution, and at the risk of His life, and then giving up His life even, rather than to give up the Sabbath of the Lord. Because it was for not keeping the Sabbath to suit the Pharisees and the scribes and the doctors of the law that He was persecuted first; and when He persisted in His way of keeping the Sabbath, that is, the Lord’s way, in spite of their persecutions, then they went about to kill Him. And when He would not give it up, then they did kill Him. But God raised Him from the dead, and took Him to a world where He can keep the Sabbath without being annoyed, and without “disturbing” anybody. He will do that one day with us too.
When Jesus came, He did not come in a way that exactly matched the leader’s expectations. He didn’t come in a way that suited the Pharisees and the scribes and the doctors of the law; Nevertheless, they were not certain but that he might develop in a way that suited them after a while. So, they studied His course for a considerable time, without making any positive opposition against Him publicly. In fact, for about 18 months of His public ministry, these people were studying Him, and looking to see what would develop. Of course, as He did not come according to their ideas, they would have nothing to do with Him if He did not develop into what would conform to their thinking. And they watched Him to see how the matter would come out. But He made no great demonstration of putting himself forward or calling attention to Himself; He simply went about quietly teaching and healing the people, and doing good everywhere that He went. They could not very well find fault with that, and it would be alright if in the end He would develop into what they expected. Jesus deliberately chose to use the Sabbath to expose the hypocrisy of the leaders. Listen to this statement from Desire of Ages, page 206.
“For this reason He had chosen the Sabbath upon which to perform the act of healing at Bethesda. He could have healed the sick man as well on any other day of the week; or He might simply have cured him, without bidding him bear away his bed. But this would not have given Him the opportunity He desired. A wise purpose underlay every act of Christ’s life on earth. Everything He did was important in itself and in its teaching. Among the afflicted ones at the pool He selected the worst case upon whom to exercise His healing power, and bade the man carry his bed through the city in order to publish the great work that had been wrought upon him. This would raise the question of what it was lawful to do on the Sabbath, and would open the way for Him to denounce the restrictions of the Jews in regard to the Lord’s day, and to declare their traditions void.”
Our work then is to follow Christ’s example; to do medical missionary work on the Sabbath and other things on the Sabbath that are part of God’s work. After all, He was faithful in all things. When we do the things that He did we are faithful as He was. Somehow God’s people haven’t caught on to that and done it with any consistency at all. They have rejected medical missionary work or redefined it into something that is not God’s plan. Large hospitals, for example, are not God’s plan and they do not fit in with Christ’s character or His Kingdom for the most part. They use science and the things that big pharma has created to try to heal in a way that is different from God’s way. And they make a lot of money at it but usually these methods don’t actually heal, they only mask the real problem. And the institutional church typically nowadays organizes itself around that scientific, big pharma, way of doing things. And it just isn’t according to God’s plan at all.
Well, whose plan is it then? The systems of the medical societies today are built on treating the symptoms, not the cause of the disease. And medical societies prescribe various pharmaceutical preparations which are actually harmful to the body and lead to premature death. Therefore, they are subjects of the enemy who has brought death onto the planet. That said, the medical society can and does do some good, especially when there is an emergency or when the patient is not willing are able to accept alternative natural medicine. But big commercial hospitals huge costs and much regulation by the government backed by pharmaceutical companies, these are clearly not in God’s plan for His people.
God’s plan is to build small sanitariums in many places. But the institutional church has built huge hospitals that are not living and representing Christ. individuals working within them might represent Christ, but the overall tendency is to support big pharma. When they serve meat and alcohol, and perform procedures on the Sabbath that are unnecessary, our big hospitals are doing wrong and in many cases are breaking the Sabbath, and doing that which God and has told us not to do. This is not in harmony with Christ. Instead it is in harmony with the enemy cloaked in a nice package.
And to do all this they have had to get money for the expensive hospitals. And to get money, they have had to take government funds in the form of Medicare, Medicaid, grants, etc., and be signed up to collect insurance money from insurance companies that don’t understand sanitariums and the way sanitariums work. So, they have to model their medical activity in the way that insurance companies will reimburse them. The insurance company isn’t going to reimburse for a hot and cold foot bath, or a hot and cold shower, or a Russian steam bath.
But it’s more than that. To get money from the Medicare and Medicaid the hospitals have to be in line with big pharma. And they have to use what big pharma gives them. And when a vaccine comes along that is designed to put toxins inside the body, the hospital system must go along with the mandates from the government or they will lose their reimbursements. Now they are coerced to do what they are told to do by the government and the medical society. It’s exactly opposite of what God wants them to do.
But there’s more. They begin the process of attempting to discredit those that promote natural remedies and therapies. These leaders are following the enemy’s plan. And they do it in the name of God’s church.
If there was a serious attempt at reform, everybody knows that the hospitals that exist today would go bankrupt. They would be cancelled, deplatformed, and expelled from the medical society. And if they still would not comply, they would probably be debanked, decommissioned, and discharged. And they would collapse.
There is also the special relationship they have with the WHO to cooperate with them in lifestyle projects. This has become more sinister then it appears on the surface. Because in order to keep that status, they have to accept whatever the WHO promotes. This has really entangled them very deeply in the system of Satan and the world that it will be almost impossible to extract themselves from it.
Accreditation has also entangled the schools and hospitals in a web of chains that makes it impossible for them to get free of it. To maintain the money flow, they have to become accredited and stay accredited. Accreditation means that they have to abide by things that the accrediting body believes are right. It costs them money in excess of what they should pay to meet the demands of accreditation. And if they try to do something different and reform the institutions, they will lose their accreditation.
To put it mildly our institutions are hopelessly entangled. And the reason is because they have not followed Christ’s example. They have not followed His counsel. They have not obeyed His commands. they have gone their own way.
Anyone who does things the way Christ did them, and follows His example, are at odds with the world’s system. And while they may be very conciliatory toward church authorities, church authorities are not going to generally support their work. First of all, they have too many other “fish to fry.” But secondly, a sanitarium is not in harmony with them and their work. They gave lip service to the health message, but they are no more in harmony with it then Christ was in harmony with the Sanhedrin; the Sadducees and Pharisees of His day. And what makes matters worse, self supporting institutions are not able to speak the truth about the church and its leaders and their opposition to the things they present. In some countries and in some places vegetarian restaurants run by self-supporting institutions are not sanctioned by the leaders. Nor is their country living message accepted, neither is it promoted by the church leaders. The determined resistance to the true reform message is evidence that the Great Sanhedrin is still alive and well and functioning today.
Let’s consider Christ some more. When a year and a half had gone by, His fame had spread throughout the land, and had attracted the attention of the pharisees, the scribes, and the doctors of the law, as well as the common people. By this time he had attracted their active attention, their interested attention, and their selfish attention, too; because as they watched Him in His course, they saw not only that He did not develop into what they expected, but, on the contrary, they saw that He was gaining influence with the people in a way that was not playing into their hands; And as He went on longer, the people were drawn more to him. They hoped that if He did not develop into what they wanted; then of course this would be evidence in itself that He could not possibly be the Messiah, and therefore His work would come to nothing.
Then Jesus openly forgave sins. The church leaders thought that He had no right to forgive sins. And they were very offended that He did this. Listen to this story from Luke 5:17.
“And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus.”
Notice that the power of God was present to heal them, including the Pharisees and the Sadducees. So, what did Jesus say to the man that was sick with palsy? Look at verse 20.
“And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.”
The man had been greatly troubled by his sins and his guilt. But now he felt he could rest because his sins were forgiven. But the scribes and Pharisees saw it a different way. Verse 21-23
“And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?”
If the scribes had followed their own line of logic, they would have had to recognize that Christ was the son of God. And this they were unwilling to do because He didn’t come to them in the way that they expected. He did not follow their plan of organization or of their work. He was at odds with what they were teaching. And this didn’t sit very well with them. Reading on from Luke 5:24, 25.
“But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.”
The church leaders who were present and were watching Him, reacted in a negative way. They heard His words, but since they could not see or understand the power of His word in this, He said also to the man that he should rise up take up his couch and go to his home. Then they saw that there was divine, even creative power in the word which He spoke. And it follows that there was power to forgive sins in the word of healing which he had spoken. And while this was in conflict with the Pharisees and scribes, this is great news to us, because Jesus still loves to forgive sins. He can forgive presumptuous sins, and repetitive sins, and grievous sins. You cannot have sinned too much for Jesus to forgive if you would just repent and conform your life to His will.
The members of the Great Sanhedrin were legally disqualified from being judges of Jesus. This had a number of different aspects. First, they were not to judge with the expectation of material reward. Every judge must act from a sense of duty only. And no judge should be a particular friend, or an enemy of either the accused or the accuser. Under no circumstances was a judge to be at enmity with the accused person. A Hebrew judge was also to be modest and of good repute among his neighbors and generally liked.
So, in essence, the way the Sanhedrin was acting at the time of Christ, with their grasping for position and with all the power and money that came with it, they could not possibly be fair judges in any trial, let alone the trial of Christ. Many of them were guilty of criminal acts in both public and private life, therefore they had a vested interest in outcome of the trial of Jesus. They were thus unfitted to be the judges over the great questions of life and death.
These men were burning enemies of Christ and were therefore disqualified to act as His judges. They had previously determined on His guilt and had sentenced Him to death before the trial began. They had outraged not only a specific provision of Hebrew law but also a principle of universal justice. Whatever the reasons for their hatred of Jesus, which were many, they were completely disqualified from being His judges.
Do you sense the same burning hatred of someone who exposes the “Sanhedrin” today for their secular alliances, and their NGOs, which yield an enormous amount of money to the church, especially when they are repeatedly censured for their hypocrisy?
The condemnation of Jesus was illegal because the merits of the defense were not considered. In any trial there are two aspects that are essential parts of the criminal case that must be considered, the accusation and the defense. So, the obvious absence of consideration of the defense begs the question, was there a real trial? It is impossible to conceive of a proper administration of justice where the accused is not permitted to defend himself. The right to combat the allegations is the essential principle of liberty under the law. Usually witnesses are cross examined, especially by the defenders of the accused. The Sanhedrin did not condemn and pronounce judgment on Jesus because they misinterpreted the evidence in His defense, but because they pronounced judgment without giving Him any defense at all.
Proof of His Messiahship was readily available and could have been provided very easily. Many of the prophecies pointed to Jesus as the Messiah. For example, Jesus was to be born in Bethlehem according to Micah 5:2.
“But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.”
The Messiah was to be born of the virgin according to Isaiah 7:14.
“Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
The Messiah was to spring from the House of David according to Jeremiah 23:5, 6.
“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”
The Messiah should not come until the sceptre had departed from Judah according to Genesis 49:10.
“The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.”
This verse also tells us that He would draw the people to Himself, something the Sanhedrin were quite angry about.
The Messiah should begin to preach in Galilee according to Isaiah 9:1, 2.
“Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations. The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.”
The Messiah should perform many miracles according to Isaiah 35:5, 6.
“Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.”
The Messiah should make his public entry into Jerusalem riding upon an ass according to Zachariah 9:9.
“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”
The Messiah should be betrayed by one of his followers for 30 pieces of silver which would finally be thrown into the potter’s field according to Psalm 41:9 and Zachariah 11:12, 13.
“Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.”
“And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD.”
And the Messiah should be a man of poverty and of suffering; and should be despised and rejected of men according to Isaiah 53:3.
“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.”
There are many more Prophetic evidences that could have been brought in His defense that are too numerous to mention. If these would have been introduced as evidence for the defense in Jesus trial, the Sanhedrin were morally and legally bound to acquit and release Jesus if they believe this testimony to be true. Through reasonable diligence, witnesses might have been secured to testify to a majority, at least, of the points I have mentioned touching messianic prophecies. All were fulfilled in their order.
What Caiaphas should have done, at the time of the arraignment in his own house, was to inform Jesus that His life was at stake and that now was the time to produce testimony in His own behalf. A fair trial in the full light of day would have presented before His judges a host of witnesses friendly to Jesus, whose testimony would have established an exact fulfillment of ancient messianic prophecy in His birth, life, arrest, and trial. Jesus should have been afforded the ordinary protections of the law and respect for His rights as a Hebrew citizen, at least to consider His defense. But if that would have happened, the Sanhedrin, who was completely biased against Jesus and held deep animus toward him, could not have gotten a conviction.
Sham church trials today do the same thing. The man is condemned before He has even heard the accusations, let alone provide his defense. Typically, church administrators do not want to hear evidence for the defense in the full light of day because their allegations would crumble to dust. And their hypocrisy become more prominent. They work secretly behind closed doors to predetermine the outcome.
The raising of Lazarus from the dead had created a frightful panic among the Sadducean oligarchy. They discussed and debated it among themselves with fear and trembling. Far from regarding Him as an obscure person whose claims were ridiculous and whose mind was unbalanced, the priests feared that all men might believe on Him, and boldly declared that His deeds and His life might influence the whole nation and be weighed in the minds of the Romans against the existence of a whole nation. They were charged with the responsibility to guard the existence of the national trust whatever the cost. It is interesting that their concern was actually a strong backhanded testimony in favor of Christ and His Messiahship.
There are things today that give church leaders much fear and trembling. The potential massive response against the exposure of their hidden governmental alliances and the tainted money that they have been receiving, is one such existential emergency which calls for an immediate and full-throated condemnation and discipline of members who don’t remain silent. Another is the blame that rests on them for the consequences of supporting the COVID vaccine and the serious trouble that it caused many members. A third one is the exposure of the abuse of the church manual in trying to discipline members who don’t comply with the instruction to be silent. They make a big deal out of support for leadership and argue that an individual or ministry that questions or criticizes the leaders is somehow not legitimate even though the questions they raise are valid.
The earth is getting very dark. But it was dark in Jesus day too. False teachings have so surrounded the truth that it is almost impossible to understand prophecies correctly. Listen to this from Desire of Ages, page 32.
“As the Jews had departed from God, faith had grown dim, and hope had well-nigh ceased to illuminate the future. The words of the prophets were uncomprehended. To the masses of the people, death was a dread mystery; beyond was uncertainty and gloom. It was not alone the wailing of the mothers of Bethlehem, but the cry from the great heart of humanity, that was borne to the prophet across the centuries,—the voice heard in Ramah, “lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.” Matthew 2:18. In “the region and shadow of death,” men sat unsolaced. With longing eyes they looked for the coming of the Deliverer, when the darkness should be dispelled, and the mystery of the future should be made plain.”
In the time of Christ, as now, the earth was dark with the misapprehension of God. False teachings had so polluted the truth that the people did not see that God had their best interests in mind. Because Satan had blinded their eyes, it was very hard for the people to see the light. They needed a new way of thinking; a new way of understanding. Jesus came to shed light on them and on us. Isaiah’s prophecy in chapter 60:2 applies to Jesus and the society of His day, but it also applies to our day.
“For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.”
All this is true today also. The people are blinded by mindless loyalty to the church leaders which makes the unaccountable, and many false teachings. But this doesn’t have to be for anyone who is willing to look for the light, and diligently seek the light of life, Jesus Christ, for they shall surely find Him. Matthew 4:16 gives us great hope for the darkness that surrounds us.
“The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.”
Jesus shined light on the evil deeds of darkness. And He will do and is doing the same now at the end of time. This verse is being fulfilled even now, though it will be fulfilled more completely in the near future. Listen to these verses from Isaiah 60:1-3.
“Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.”
This is actually one of the greatest end-time promises and prophecies of the Bible. It gives courage to those who are faint. It is designed to bring hope to the broken-hearted who look at the circumstances around us and see nothing but darkness and gloom. That’s why we need a new way of thinking. Because Christ will turn all negative and dark experiences into a means of glorifying Him and of saving you.
I would like to revisit the trial in Caiaphas’ palace. It is one of the most dramatic and significant events in the illegal trial of Christ. It was His condemnation pronounced by Caiaphas. Let’s read it from Matthew 26:65.
“Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.”
The rending of his priestly robes not only disqualified Caiaphas to act as a judge, but it also brought upon his own head the very sentence that he was seeking to impose upon Jesus. The mosaic code did not permit the high priest to “uncover his head;” and if he should rent his sacred priestly garments, the penalty was death. Leviticus 10:6 and 21:10 make this clear.
“And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Uncover not your heads, neither rend your clothes; lest ye die, and lest wrath come upon all the people…”
“And he that is the high priest among his brethren, upon whose head the anointing oil was poured, and that is consecrated to put on the garments, shall not uncover his head, nor rend his clothes.”
This was a serious offence for the high priest to do. But it had a number of significant implications. Desire of Ages, page 708.
“Rending his robe, that the people might see his pretended horror, he demanded that without further preliminaries the prisoner be condemned for blasphemy. “What further need have we of witnesses?” he said; “behold, now ye have heard His blasphemy. What think ye?” And they all condemned Him.”
Instead of rending his heart under conviction that Christ was the Messiah, Caiaphas rent his sacerdotal robe. Little did he realize the deep significance of this act. He did it to influence the judges and secure Christ’s condemnation. In this act he pronounced upon himself the death penalty that he was seeking to place on Christ, and symbolically portrayed what was going to happen to Israel spiritually by condemning Jesus. Let’s read it from Desire of Ages page 708.
“A high priest was not to rend his garments. By the Levitical law, this was prohibited under sentence of death. Under no circumstances, on no occasion, was the priest to rend his robe. It was the custom among the Jews for the garments to be rent at the death of friends, but this custom the priests were not to observe. Express command had been given by Christ to Moses concerning this.”
The high priest who rent his robe was looked upon as being severed from God. He cut himself off from being a representative of God’s character of perfection. He was no longer accepted by God as an officiating priest. Desire Ages, page 709 adds this.
“By rending his garments, Caiaphas made of no effect the law of God, to follow the tradition of men. A man-made law provided that in case of blasphemy a priest might rend his garments in horror at the sin, and be guiltless. Thus the law of God was made void by the laws of men… Each action of the high priest was watched with interest by the people; and Caiaphas thought for effect to display his piety. But in this act, designed as an accusation against Christ, he was reviling the One of whom God had said, “My name is in Him.” Exodus 23:21. He himself was committing blasphemy. Standing under the condemnation of God, he pronounced sentence upon Christ as a blasphemer.”
The act was a symbol of where the Jewish nation stood at the time of Christ’s crucifixion. Let’s read Desire Ages, page 709
“When Caiaphas rent his garment, his act was significant of the place that the Jewish nation as a nation would thereafter occupy toward God. The once favored people of God were separating themselves from Him, and were fast becoming a people disowned by Jehovah. When Christ upon the cross cried out, “It is finished” (John 19:30), and the veil of the temple was rent in twain, the Holy Watcher declared that the Jewish people had rejected Him who was the antitype of all their types, the substance of all their shadows. Israel was divorced from God. Well might Caiaphas then rend his official robes, which signified that he claimed to be a representative of the great High Priest; for no longer had they any meaning for him or for the people. Well might the high priest rend his robes in horror for himself and for the nation.”
As you can see, the Jewish nation was about to be completely separated from God and no longer would be the chosen people of God. This reveals that the modern idea of evangelicals about Israel being the people of God today is wrong. Caiaphas had already sealed the destiny of the Israelite nation long ago. And today the Jewish nation holds no advantage above any other. Only individual Jews can accept Christ as their savior and be saved. The modern evangelical nonsense is used for purposes of political advantage.
By the rending of his robe, Caiaphas revealed the passionate hatred of Christ that lay beneath the dignity of the high priest. This level of animosity will be revealed again in the last days in the hatred of God’s people for their adherence to the Sabbath. Make no mistake. The outward appearance of those who have a smile on their faces and congratulatory voices of flattery cover the deep animosity toward the Sabbath. The Sabbath is still a very big issue today. After all, the hatred of the Sabbath is inspired by the enemy of Christ and His symbol of loyalty for His people. Let us now read Desire of Ages page 710
“Christ’s very nobility and godlike bearing goaded them to madness. His meekness, His innocence, His majestic patience, filled them with hatred born of Satan. Mercy and justice were trampled upon. Never was a criminal treated in so inhuman a manner as was the Son of God.”
Do you think you will be able to have the same God-like bearing as Christ did before His unjust judges? You can be like Christ. But you have to totally commit yourself to Him. Think about recent events. Did individuals who were accused and condemned unfairly display a character that was like Christ. They are getting practice for the real crisis. And we were getting a lesson about how to navigate the terrible onslaught from church leaders and others. We actually saw modern examples of godly men put into the crucible of unjust and cruel actions of church leaders. This was a priceless lesson for us. And it was a priceless experience for them.
Let us pray. Father in heaven, we have seen much in recent times that has taught us things about what is coming upon the earth at the end of time and upon your people. Please send Your Holy Spirit to be with us that we can react in a Christlike way when we face similar trials. Help us, Lord, to be successful in the crisis that is before us. We want to be saved. And these things help us to understand what it will take in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ that is deep and loyal. It also shows us that we must overcome the sins in our lives that distance us from Christ. Please forgive us for our negligence and arrogance. And purify us, we pray, in Jesus name, Amen.
