The world is rocking and rolling with massive earthquakes striking one after another in quick succession.

On Thursday, August 16, Italy was struck by a series of earthquakes in the central region of Molise, a popular holiday hotspot on the eastern Italian coast, sparking fears from residents over a volcano in the southern city of Naples where the shocks were also felt. At least 9 earthquakes occurred in about 2 hours.

Mt. Vesuvius sits above the city of Naples with 3,000,000 residents and is considered the most dangerous volcano on the planet because of its violent explosions and its proximity to such a densely populated region.

The quake’s epicentre was in the eastern-coastal Italian city Montecilfone. This is the second serious shock to hit the region after a 4.7 shock was felt three days earlier. The depth of the quake has been reported to be around 12km from the epicentre.

Then, one day later, August 17, a very deep earthquake, magnitude 6.7, hit under the Flores Sea, Indonesia. It was at a depth of over 538kms. It was felt by more than 26,000,000 people. It has no tsunami potential. Most of the people in this region live and work in vulnerable buildings.

On the same day, the Costa Rica’s southern region near the border with Panama was hit with a powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake, which knocked out power. It was at a depth of 12 miles.

The USGS recorded at least one subsequent temblor of magnitude 4.9.  Costa Rica’s National System for Monitoring Tsunamis ruled out a tsunami alert.

In neighboring Panama, civil defense officials said via Twitter that the quake was felt strongly in the border provinces of Chiriqui and Bocas del Toro, but that there were no immediate reports of damage.

Then, on August 18, a powerful magnitude 7.9 quake struck in the Pacific Ocean, 291 km (180 miles) from Ndoi island of Fiji. The quake hit at a depth of 570km (354 miles), too deep to cause a tsunami. Its power approaches the strongest deep-focus (over 300km deep) quake on record, the magnitude 8.3 Okhotsk Sea quake of 2013.

Then, on August 19, Indonesia was rocked yet again with a powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake, the latest in a series of tremors to hit the Lombok region (mostly) since July 20 claiming nearly 500 lives so far. One quake on August 5 caused more than $350,000,000 in damage and displacing more than 400,000 people.

The United States Geological Survey reported that the latest quake hit north-north-west of the battered Indonesian island of Lombok, at a depth of merely one mile or 1.6km.

There was no immediate tsunami alert. The quake was felt hard in East Lombok, but was also felt in Bali, Sumbawa, East Java and Makassar.
