El hombre armado que abrió fuego en Umpqua Community College y asesinó a nueve personas e hirió a otras siete, les preguntó a sus víctimas cuál era su religión mientras los enfrentaba con tres pistolas y un rifle de asalto para luego dispararle a los cristianos.
Según el diario Los Angeles Times, Ana Boylan, estudiante que recibió un disparo en la espalda, le dijo a su abuela en su cama del hospital que mientras ella yacía herida, escuchó cuando el hombre armado, le pedía a las personas que se levantaran y declararan su religión.
El atacante, identificado Chris Harper Mercer, de 26 años, y residente de Oregón, es relativamente desconocido y la policía ha revelado pocos detalles sobre él.
Pidiendo una legislación para un mayor control de armas, el presidente Obama dijo: «Esta es una opción política que debemos tomar para que esto no suceda cada pocos meses en los Estados Unidos. De manera colectiva, nosotros somos responsables ante aquellas familias que han perdido a sus seres queridos a causa de nuestra falta de acción».
El ataque se encuentra entre los peores tiroteos masivos realizados en centros educativos de las últimas dos décadas, incluyendo el de Columbine High School en Colorado en 1999, en el cual 13 personas perdieron la vida; la masacre de la Escuela Primaria de Sandy Hook en Connecticut en 2012, que cobró 26 vidas; y la masacre de Virginia Tech en 2007, en el que 32 personas perdieron la vida.
El pistolero hirió a Ana Boylan en su espalda. Ella cayó al suelo y fingió estar muerta. También le disparó a la chica que estaba a su lado. «Mientras Boylan yacía allí, oyó al pistolero que le pedía a los demás que estaban en el aula que se levantarán y declaran su religión. Si decían que eran cristianos, eran fusilados. «La policía confirmó que las víctimas debían declarar su religión antes de los disparos”.
Umpqua tiene una población estudiantil de aproximadamente 3,300 estudiantes entre los de tiempo completo y medio tiempo. Según el sitio web del campus, se ofrece «un ambiente seguro, pacífico y actividades recreativas durante todo el año». A ninguno de sus empleados, ni aún su único agente de seguridad, se les permite llevar un arma. El campus es una zona libre de armas.

They are all «gun-free» zones. The attacker knew that no one could stop the attack. If it had not been a «gun-free» zone then there would have been the potential that it could have been stopped. If the attacker knew that someone might have had the means to stop them, then that in itself would have been a deterrent. The attackers in these situations know that the people they are going to attack are «sitting ducks» and that they will not be able to stop the attack. I do not believe that this was classified as a hate crime, but it truly was. If I recall correctly the attacker in this case had been seeking help and they knew they were not stable. The system let this man down and all of the victims. This is just another excuse to try to control our amendment right to self defense. When these attacks occur many people blame «guns» rather than the person and the system that allows it to happen in the first place. Guns do not kill people without a person pulling the trigger! Remember that if guns are outlawed then only outlaws will have guns!

After World War II, the people of Japan had no firearms. Only the military possessed weapons. Compare that with the general population in the United States during World War II. If any Japanese forces had landed on the west coast, they would not have gotten very far. Every wife, mother, and grandmother would have pulled out their shotguns. The ethics of this can be discussed, but from a societal viewpoint, self-preservation is equated with freedom from tyranny.
