Los líderes religiosos deben trabajar más con el fin de prevenir la violencia causada por motivos religiosos, dijo Jerry White, asistente del Secretario de Estado para la Oficina sobre Conflicto y Operaciones de Estabilización del gobierno estadounidense. White visitó Roma hace poco con el fin de promover un «Pacto Mundial de las Religiones del Mundo». White cree que los líderes religiosos desempeñan un papel crucial en la lucha contra el alarmante aumento de la violencia por motivos religiosos.
White expresó: «La religión es un vocabulario que se utiliza para justificar la violencia. Y ella debe ser parte de la solución. Por eso es que” se necesita “una conversación sobre un nuevo pacto, un tratado de paz entre religiones…».
Además dijo: «Tenemos que ir realmente más allá de los encuentros donde se toman fotos y más allá de las conferencias interreligiosas, y decir: ¿Cómo haremos para que nuestro acuerdo sea una «fatwa” (Ley islámica) interreligiosa contra la violencia»?
White cree que Roma desempeña un papel muy importante porque la gente la busca para que lidere y alcance a ambas partes. «Roma, más que nunca, [tiene] ese tipo de corretaje neutral, un tercer lado… Vemos señales esperanzadoras en personas que están siendo motivadas a tomar posiciones valientes a fin de conseguir la paz y renunciar a la violencia…»
Cada vez más, Roma está siendo contactada en busca de soluciones para la creciente violencia arraigada en el extremismo religioso. Se respeta grandemente al carismático Papa Francisco y se le busca para conseguir soluciones geopolíticas y religiosas. No hace mucho tiempo, Shimon Peres, ex-primer ministro de Israel, le sugirió al Papa que encabezara una organización de Religiones Unidas. Ahora otro gobierno, los Estados Unidos, están pidiendo algo similar.
