Australian Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi says he has been “proved correct” that legalizing same-sex marriage would lead to demands to endorse polygamy. Senator Bernardi’s latest comments come as a Greens bill to recognize same-sex marriages is to be debated in the Senate.
Something is happening in Australia regarding the same-sex marriage debate. After Kevin Rudd “changed his mind on same-sex marriage,” widely thought to be a political accommodation, Mr. Bernie Ripoli, another Labor MP also changed his mind. One by one, politicians are being influenced to change their mind in favor of same-sex marriage. It is only a matter of time until Australia recognizes gay marriage.
Referring to a petition by the Polyamory Action Lobby, Bernardi said some sections of society were now moving in the “abhorrent and disgusting” direction toward polygamy… There is actually now a petition being put together for the House of Representatives by Green activists to legally recognize multi-member unions,” he said.
The Polyamory group said, “We demand nothing less than the full recognition of polyamorous families.”
“I said that would happen,” Bernardi said. “It’s happening… I think there should be alarm… If you’re going to re-define a word to satisfy demands of a minority then you’re going to face continuing demands in that space.”
That space is occupied in some countries, like Canada, by radical human right’s commissions who prosecute those who exercise their free speech rights to explain the Bible’s prohibitions on homosexuality.
The Greens claim that they do not support any other changes to the marriage act, except that marriage should be permitted between any two people. The nature of politics being what it is, this could be a temporary position.
Senator Bernardi also stood by his controversial comments last year that the “next step” after recognizing same-sex marriage was to support “creepy people” who chose to have sex with animals.
“Bestiality, of course it was an extreme example, but once again it’s linked to the radical agenda of the Greens Party,” he said.
Finance Minister Penny Wong added to the condemnation of Senator Bernardi, saying his ‘‘offensive comments have no place in modern Australia… The principle of equality is far greater than the pathetic attempts by Cory Bernardi to drum up fear and prejudice,” she said.
“Likewise also, as it was in the days of Lot.” Luke 21:17
