Politico, by Isabella Borshoff: After narrowly winning political approval last month, Ursula von der Leyen has now received a spiritual vote of confidence — from the pope.
Asked in an interview with Italy’s La Stampa whether he was happy with the appointment of a woman at the head of the European Commission, Pope Francis replied: “Yes, also because a woman can be well-suited to reviving the strength of the founding fathers. Women have the ability to bring people together, to unite.”
The pope also said that populism and isolationism pose a threat to the unity of Europe. “I am worried because we hear speeches that resemble those of Hitler in 1934,” he said.
But he expressed hope that, in the wake of this year’s European Parliament election, Europe could start a “process of relaunch and will move forward without interruption.”

Von der Leyen was recently appointed as the German Minister of Defense, being the most likely to succeed Angela Merkel. The papal blessing no doubt hints at who stands behind the European Union.
