U.S.: Back to Iraq?

A recent USA Today opinion poll revealed that, increasingly, Americans believe the United States has a responsibility to respond to rising violence in Iraq, though they do not like the idea of being pulled back into a military conflict.

Of those polled in August, 44% say that the U.S. bears a responsibility to “do something” about the violence in Iraq from the Islamic State (IS) militant group, but are fearful of getting too deeply involved. The previous month 39% thought the U.S. should do something. Even though support for intervention has increased, more than half are leery about going too far, while 39% are concerned that the U.S. will not go far enough in stopping the IS.

The Islamic State has been brutally violent in its takeover of parts of northern Iraq. The U.S. has been carrying out airstrikes on the IS with fighter jets, bombers and drones since August 8 to slow their progress.
