Tony Palmer Killed in Motorcycle Accident

Tony Palmer died in hospital after hours of surgery because of a motorcycle accident. Tony Palmer quickly rose to fame, when Pope Francis sent him to a charismatic minister’s conference in Forth Worth, TX run by Kenneth Copeland in February with a recorded message of love and unity for them on video. Subsequently, Kenneth Copeland and other evangelicals went to Rome to meet with the pope.

Palmer, a charismatic himself, was an Anglican bishop of the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches, a breakaway denomination that considers itself part of the “Convergence Movement,” a movement to converge charismatic worship with more traditional liturgies, such as the Anglican liturgy. Palmer was also pushing for unity with Rome. He confidently declared to the minister’s conference that “Luther’s protest is over.” Then he asked them, “Is yours?”

The meeting between the evangelicals, arranged by Tony Palmer was remarkable because most conservative evangelicals viewed the pope as the antichrist once upon a time.

The charismatic movement is one of the bridges to bring evangelical Christians back to Rome. Speaking in tongues is a characteristic of the charismatic movement in which the mind of the person is taken over by a spirit and gives utterance in an unknown tongue, which is even unknown to God.

“Some of these persons have exercises, which they call gifts and say that the Lord has placed them in the church. They have an unmeaning gibberish which they call the unknown tongue, which is unknown not only by man but by the Lord and all heaven. Such gifts are manufactured by men and women, aided by the great deceiver. Fanaticism, false excitement, false talking in tongues, and noisy exercises have been considered gifts which God has placed in the Church. Some have been deceived here. The fruits of all this have not been good…” Maranatha, page 154

Tony Palmer had done much in recent times to bring charismatic evangelicals back to the Catholic Church. Perhaps his absence will slow down the process to some extent.

“And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.” Revelation 7:1
