Pork and Other Red Meat as Carcinogenic as Smoking

Pork on your fork is not the way to reduce your risk of cancer. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) has published a report on the dangers of eating processed meat like bacon, ham, sausages and lamb, which are carcinogenic to humans in the highest possible of five rankings, space shared with alcohol, asbestos, arsenic and cigarettes. Even fresh red meat is also regarded as bad for your health.

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) has been telling us for several years that there is “strong evidence” that eating a lot of red meat can cause bowel cancer. Also, studies show that people who eat a lot of red meat tend to eat fewer plant-based foods that protect against cancer. They are also less likely to be less active, drink more and smoke. Studies have shown that the more processed meat people eat, the more likely they are to die early from any cause. One study linked processed meat to one-in-30 premature deaths.

The WCRF advises people to eat processed meats such as ham, bacon and salami as little as possible. In other words, essentially cut it out all together. That includes hamburgers, minced beef, hot dogs, pork chops and roast lamb, not to mention deli meats, like cold cuts, bologna, salami, pastrami, pepperoni, etc.

The new report echoes many past studies that have shown that meat produces cancer-causing substances, called “polyaroamic hydrocarbons,” and that preserving it by smoking, curing, salting or adding preservatives, can introduce carcinogens. Processed meats are often made using sodium nitrite, a color fixer to make the meat look fresh. This causes nitrosamines in the human body.

Those who eat a lot of beef and processed meats greatly increase their risk of colorectal cancer and pancreatic cancer and are also more likely to get cardiovascular disease and diabetes, two leading killers worldwide.

WCRF completed a detailed review of 7000 clinical studies to examine the links between diet and cancer. The analysis concluded “processed meats are too dangerous for human consumption.”

“Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables constitute the diet chosen for us by our Creator. These foods, prepared in as simple and natural a manner as possible, are the most healthful and nourishing. They impart a strength, a power of endurance, and a vigor of intellect that are not afforded by a more complex and stimulating diet.” Ministry of Healing, page 296
