Pope Francis meets with Tech Execs

Pope Francis, a self-confessed tech “dinosaur,” met with the longtime CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, for a private audience on January 15. While there is much speculation about the 15-minute meeting at the Vatican, it is not clear what the discussion was about. The Vatican will not discuss the content of their meeting. Nevertheless, the tech exec and the pope have some common interests. Schmidt set up a family foundation dedicated to the sustainable use of energy and natural resources, something that resonates with the pope.

But though the secret contents of the meeting remain a mystery, a video report on the meeting by Rome Reports, showed Schmidt at the end of the meeting saying to Pope Francis, “I want to work with you to make these points… We will make it happen.”

The audience with Schmidt, dubbed a “Google Hangout,” by one popular blogger, was extraordinary because pontiffs rarely give private audiences to top business chiefs because they don’t want to appear as endorsing their products. However, there are obviously bigger issues that the two men wanted to discuss. Perhaps the pope had some requests for the Google CEO.

One week later the pope gave a private audience with Tim Cook, the openly gay leader of Apple, Inc. Again, no word on what they discussed.

Obviously, these merchants of the earth and the Vatican are up to something. Perhaps in due time, we’ll find out. In the meantime, they will no doubt benefit by their collaboration with the pope in his requests.

Google and Apple wonder after. See Revelation 13:3
