“Italy’s senate has passed a bill that recognizes same-sex civil unions by a vote of 173-71. However, LGBT groups condemned the bill because it did not permit adoptions. Same-sex couples can have the same tax breaks, medical decision-making rights and pension entitlements that are given to heterosexual couples. The initial bill permitted gay people to adopt their partner’s biological child, but a compromise changed that clause.
The bill was held up in parliament for years, but got a push when the European court of Human Rights condemned Italy for discriminating against gays.
Prime Minister Matteo Renzi called the passage of the law a historic event and tweeted “love wins.” Renzi had pledged to “modernize” Italy’s marriage laws during his campaign.
“Likewise also, as it was in the days of Lot…” Luke 17:28
