Iraqi Prime Minister meets with Pope

Pope Francis and the Prime Minister of Iraq, Haydar al-Abadi, met in private audience on February 16, 2016. The friendly meeting referenced the “good state of bilateral relations,” and the state of Christian and ethnic minorities living in the country and the need to protect their rights.

The Vatican communiqué emphasized the “role of interreligious dialogue and the responsibility of religious communities in promoting tolerance and peace.”

As usual on such occasions, the prime minister followed the meeting with the pope by a meeting with Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, accompanied by Secretary for Relations with the States, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.

Iraq is one of the countries where Christian minorities are brutally persecuted by the Islamic State, which would, no doubt, have underscored the basis of the meeting. Does the Islamic State increase the pressure and motivation for Iraq’s interest in Vatican support?

Terrorism in general, creates circumstances that open opportunities for Rome to collaborate with national and global leaders in elevating the Papacy as the global peace broker. It’s all part of the plan.

Iraq wonders after. See Revelation 13:3.
