Growing Majority of Americans Approve of Gay Marriage

A recent Gallup poll reveals that most Americans believe gay marriage should be legal and have the same legal benefits as traditional marriage. The fifty-five percent majority is an all-time high. In 1996 the Gallup polling organization says the percentage was only 27%. Those opposed to gay marriage dropped from 68% in 1996 to 42% today. It gained majority support in 2011 for the first time.

“For proponents of marriage equality, years of playing offense have finally paid off as this movement has reached a tipping point in recent years – both legally and in the court of public opinion,” said Justin McCarthy, a Gallup analyst. “Gay marriage supporters’ game strategy has officially pivoted to challenging state bans in court,” especially in southern states where most of the States have constitutional bans of gay marriage.

Support for gay marriage is mostly among younger adults and among Democrats, whereas, those who oppose it are typically older than 50. Less than a third of Republicans support it. The age group differential means that support will continue to grow over time and opposition will wane.
