Germany Under Pressure in Increase Military Spending

“If you want peace you must prepare for war,” said André Wüstner, the Chairman of the German Armed Forces Association, February 8. He called for Germany defense spending increases of €1 billion. “In order to achieve full operational readiness of the armed forces, we must gradually increase the defense budget over the next few years, starting with €1 billion in 2016,” said Mr. Wüstner.

A few weeks earlier, the Military Commissioner of the German Bundestag (parliament) Helmut Königshaus said that Germany’s armed forces will be unable to fulfill their mission if spending isn’t increased.

Germany’s NATO allies have also called for Germany to increase its military budget. Germany spends 1.3 percent of its GDP on defense, while NATO requires its members to spend two percent.

The German military is plagued by shortages of aircraft, tanks, and other weaponry and equipment.

By not increasing spending, “we risk losing the trust of our allies that we have only just regained,” added Mr. Wüstner.

“And there shall be wars and rumors of wars.” Matthew 24:6
