Gallup: 63% of American Adults Drink Alcohol, Beer is Favorite

CNS News, by Michael W. Chapman: In its latest survey on drinking, Gallup discovered that 63% of American adults “use alcoholic beverages” and that 36% are “total abstainers.” The poll also found that the more money you make and the more education you have, the more you drink.

In the survey, Gallup asked, “Do you have occasion to use alcoholic beverages such as liquor, wine or beer, or are you a total abstainer?” In response, 63% said they drink alcohol (adults aged 18 and older).

Gallup has run this survey since 1939, when 58% said they drank alcohol.

“Across the trend, the percentage saying they drink has dipped as low as 55% (in 1958) and risen as high as 71% (in the 1970s),” reported Gallup. “However, in recent decades, the U.S. drinking rate has consistently registered near the long-term average of 63%.”

Drinking also varies among people of different incomes. For instance, Gallup found that 80% of adults living in households earning $100,000 or more said they consume alcohol. However, among adults making $40,000 to $99,999 a year, only 63% said they drink alcohol.

For those making less than a $40,000 a year, only 49% said they drink.

Among the educated, 75% of adults with a post-graduate degree drink; 76% of adults with a college degree only; 65% with some college; and only 51% with no college.

Apparently, the more degrees you have, the more you are likely to drink regularly. On a related note, 24% of adults with a college degree described themselves as “total abstainers,” no drinking.

When it comes to the sexes, 66% of U.S. males said they use alcoholic beverages, as did 61% of females. Adults age 21-29 had the largest percentage drinkers, 71%.

By race/ethnicity, 68% of whites drink, 50% of black adults, and 59% of Hispanic adults. Fifty-percent of black adults said they abstained.

In another question, Gallup asked, “Do you most often drink liquor, wine or beer?” In response, 35% said beer, 31% said wine, and 30% said liquor.

In 2018, less than 20% of U.S. adults said they drank liquor; back in 1992, it was 21%.

“Instruction in this line should be given in every school and in every home. The youth and children should understand the effect of alcohol, tobacco, and other like poisons in breaking down the body, beclouding the mind, and sensualizing the soul. It should be made plain that no one who uses these things can long possess the full strength of his physical, mental, or moral faculties.” Child Guidance, page 408.4.
