Floods in Central Europe Wreak Havoc

“Thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes in eastern Germany where the Elbe has flooded and burst through a dam.” In the city of Halle, “water levels reached their highest in some 400 years.” In addition, the city of Passau “has seen its worst flooding in some 500 years.”

At least 24 people were killed by the week of flooding in central Europe, which included Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Switzerland. Heavy rains up to 10 inches (250mm) in some places over merely three days, caused at least three major rivers to overflow, and one dam and several dikes to break. The rain was far more than normal. In some places it was a “once in a century” event. Such an event however happened in 2002.

Many thousands were evacuated throughout the region. In Magdeburg alone, more than 23,000 people had been evacuated because of severe flooding of streets and buildings. Electricity was also shut off.

Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, “said no casualties have been reported in his country, but 8,000 soldiers and thousands of volunteers were packing sandbags on the banks of the Danube to shore up flood walls.”

Try as they might, though, the government cannot help to protect people from disasters such as this.

“While appearing to the children of men as a great physician who can heal all their maladies, [Satan] will bring disease and disaster, until populous cities are reduced to ruin and desolation. Even now he is at work. In accidents and calamities by sea and by land, in great conflagrations, in fierce tornadoes and terrific hailstorms, in tempests, floods, cyclones, tidal waves, and earthquakes, in every place and in a thousand forms, Satan is exercising his power… These visitations are to become more and more frequent and disastrous. Destruction will be upon both man and beast.” Great Controversy, page 589-590
