CBS News, by Joe Walsh: The Defense Department’s inspector general released estimates Monday on the cost of the Iran war in its first four months, tallying up the cost of expended munitions, damage to U.S. diplomatic facilities and destroyed equipment.
The Iran war cost the Defense Department an estimated $33.4 billion as of June 29, the report said. That includes $22.3 billion for expended munitions and $3.7 billion in lost equipment, along with $7.4 billion in incremental costs, mostly to fund the military’s day-to-day operations.
The $33.4 billion price tag does not include the cost of repairing U.S. bases that were damaged by Iranian counterattacks, the government watchdog said. Military facilities were damaged in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman and Jordan.
The expended munitions have “resulted in strategic inventory shortfalls and revealed industrial base bottlenecks for munitions resupply,” the report said, citing the Defense Department’s Office of the Under Secretary for Acquisition and Sustainment. Concerns that the Iran war has depleted U.S. munitions stockpiles have circulated for months.
