Israeli President Meets Pope at the Vatican

Pope Francis and president of Israel, Reuven Rivlin, met on September 3 to promote “a climate of trust” between Israelis and Palestinians.

The cordial discussions focused on the political and social situation in the Middle East. The condition of Christians and other minority groups was also discussed. They also discussed the importance of interreligious dialogue and “the responsibility of religious leaders in promoting reconciliation and peace.”

A Vatican statement said they also discussed the relations between the State of Israel and the Holy See, and between state authorities and local Catholic communities, such as the situation with Christian (Catholic) schools in the country.

As is normal for such meetings, the Israeli president also met with Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, accompanied by Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Gallagher.
