Francis Meets with Jewish Delegation

In yet another ecumenical meeting, Pope Francis had his first meeting with members of the Jewish religion. During the meeting, he condemned anti-Semitism as incompatible with Christianity and promised to promote collaboration between the Catholic Church and Jewish groups around the world.

He stressed the historical ties between Christians and Jews through the common use of scripture and the origins of Christianity through Judaism. He also sought to repair relations with Jews that had deteriorated over Vatican attempts to beatify Pope Pius XII (the pope of World War II), and the re-introduction of the Latin Good Friday prayer that is insensitive to the Jews.

The Jewish delegation and Jewish organizations around the world responded favorably to Francis’ overtures.
