Defense of Marriage Act Dumped by U.S. Supreme Court

In a sweeping decision the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defined marriage as between one man and one woman in U.S. federal law.

The court decision and the momentum to enact gay marriage laws in many states are changing America quickly into a national Sodom.

President Barack Obama applauded the decision and tweeted. “Today’s DOMA ruling is a historic step forward for #MarriageEquality. #LoveIsLove.”

In a statement he said “This was discrimination enshrined in law. It treated loving, committed gay and lesbian couples as a separate and lesser class of people.”

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi also tweeted her enthusiasm. “Today, the Supreme Court bent the arc of history once again toward justice, discarding the defenseless #DOMA into the dustbin of history.”

The 5-4 decision said that the 1996 DOMA law was unconstitutional and violated the equal protection clause by giving federal benefits to heterosexual couples while denying them to gay couples in states where same-sex marriage is legal.

A political commentator tweeted “If Rs (Republicans) are smart, they will accept #SCOTUS #DOMA decision. Anti-gay rights is a TOTAL loser for GOP (Republican Party), sending [the] young to [the] Ds (Democrats).”

DOMA was originally passed by both houses of the U.S. Congress with bipartisan majorities and was signed into federal law in 1996 by President Bill Clinton.

On the same day, the Supreme Court refused to hear a case concerning California’s Proposition 8, a law voted by a referendum of the people of California defending traditional marriage, which had been overturned by a the ninth circuit.

Times have dramatically changed in 17 years since DOMA was enacted. The changes are rapidly leading to the fulfillment of Jesus’ words: “likewise as it was in the days of Lot… Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.” Luke 17:28-30. While God loves all people, through the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah He warns us against the sin of homosexuality.
