The Castro Brothers and the Catholic Church

“Raul and Fidel Castro were raised by a rosary-reciting, Catholic mother. They attended high school at the Jesuit-run Belen College, although Raul didn’t finish. Despite initially declaring Cuba atheists state, the Castro’s have regularly, if hypocritically, paid respect to the Catholic Church. Fidel’s visit to the Vatican in 1996 laid the ground for Pope John Paul II’s historic visit to Cuba in January of 1998 when the Pope called for the release of some political prisoners, which occurred a few months later.”

Cardinal Jaime Ortega’s 35-year leadership of the Cuban Catholic Church has made the church strong by not confronting the Castro’s and at the same time working with them to win their confidence and more independence for the church. The result is that the Catholic Church has emerged as the only national institution that functions independent of the state.

“With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.” Revelation 17:2
